School is at its best when it gives students the expectation that they will not only dream big, but dream dreams that they can work on every day until they accomplish them—not because they were chosen by a black-box process, but because they worked hard enough to reach them.

Success is a function of persistence and doggedness and the willingness to work hard for twenty-two minutes to make sense of something that most people would give up on after thirty seconds.

046 - The Scoreboard

Having given up television now until I graduate in May, it’s been tough to follow my favorite team (the Detroit Red Wings) as much as I’d like, but reading through an article from NHL.com, I was presented with a storyline too familiar to not write a blog post on.

Those of you who follow the Red Wings closely may know that Henrik Zetterberg is not having his best year. In fact, the man who annually contends for one of the top spots on the list of scorers in the league just scored his 10th goal of the season (which is now more than halfway over) tonight.

Zetterberg has had a bit of trouble finding the back of the net this season, and if we’re being honest, I feel the same way.

Presently, I’m still working as an RA, at my job at the stadium, on my coursework, and with COMPASS. But that is now all I do. Those four things. And yet I’m still pretty much busy from 6am-midnight every day of the week. Because I’m that busy, I’m finding that it’s been a while since I’ve really completed something and felt fully satisfied that I put 100% of my effort into that one thing.

Much like Henrik Zetterberg before tonight, it’s been a while since I’ve found the back of the net.

But Zetterberg has still been piling up the assists this season. In fact, he has 30 assists right now. His two linemates, Valtteri Filppula and Jiri Hudler, have combined for 33 goals and 43 assists this season. And the Detroit Red Wings as a team are sitting relatively comfortably on top of the Western Conference and playing back and forth in the points race with the New York Rangers for first place in the league.

In other words, everyone around Zetterberg is doing pretty good as a group.

And that’s how it is for me, too. The Case Hall staff is awesome. We all pretty much get along, collaborative programming is always a blast, and we’ve got great team chemistry. COMPASS is taking off more than I could see in the short term, and I’m really excited for where the program is headed. I’m completing my tasks at work efficiently. My teams are all doing great.

But at the same time, I’m so busy that I can’t quite knock home goals on everything. I pick up a personal victory here and there, but most of what I’m doing is tossing out assists. And in a way, I’m okay with that.

In the words of Zetterberg,

“We’re on top in the League, and I can’t be that disappointed. You’ve got to find a way to help the team. If you can’t really score goals, then you’ve got to do other stuff and it will turn around. It will come. It always evens out, so I’m not that depressed.”

And that’s pretty much how I feel. COMPASS? We’re on top in the league, man. We’re blazing a trail. I can’t be that disappointed. I’m just going to keep going out every day and playing the game, and it will turn around.
